French Proficiency Test Results |
Results from an official French language test are required. DAP Candidates must have a min. B2 level. Check your program’s specific pre-requisites, you may need a higher level. We recommend finding a proficiency test as early as possible before submitting your application, as results may take several weeks to be received, and registration deadlines may be well before test dates. Most students applying to programs with French as the language of instruction will be required to take the TCF or the DELF/DALF. Check with the programs you're interested in to learn their requirements. Locations of TCF and DELF/DALF testing centers can be found here. |
French Translations |
You will need to obtain French translations of all documents (except for your passport and French test results). The diploma and transcripts MUST be translated officially and completed by a professional. Translations of the letter/s of recommendation and resume do not have to be completed by a professional, but they must be in perfect French. We suggest finding a translator through the French Embassy's list : Liste de traducteurs - La France en Thaïlande (ambafrance.org). |

FIND YOUR CATEGORY AND STUDENT TYPE
Identifying yourself within one student type is essential to understanding the Campus France and Etudes en France application process.
The first thing you need to do as a prospective student in France is understand your student type. Knowing your student type is critical for completing the Etudes en France application correctly, understanding how Campus France’s role, and accessing the correct instruction materials.
There are six distinct student types that fall into two overarching categories, describing generally the way in which you are using the Etudes en France application and working with Campus France.
The six distinct student types are:
1. DAP Candidates – Students using Etudes en France to apply to enter a French university at the Licence 1 level. These candidates may apply to up to three L1 programs using one application.
2. HDAP Candidates – Students using Etudes en France to apply to enter a French university at the Licence 2, Licence 3, or Masters level. These candidates may apply to up to seven programs using one application.
3. Study Abroad/Exchange/Dual-Degree - Pre-Consular Applicants – Students enrolled in a US college or university who will study abroad in France, in any type of institution, for a period of over 90 days.
4. Independent - Pre-Consular Applicants – Students who have been admitted independently to a non-degree-granting program in France. This may be a certificate program, a FLE (French as a foreign language) program, an art or gastronomy program, etc. If you are not earning a Licence, Masters, or Doctoral degree during your program in France, you are an independent student.
5. HDAP Allégé - Pre-Consular Applicants – Students who have applied directly to a French institution of higher education and already gained admission to a L2, L3, or Masters program. PHD STUDENTS
PHD STUDENTS
Before you can enroll in a PhD in France, you must find a thesis supervisor and subject. What are the steps?
STEPS
If you wish to do a Doctorate in natural and technological sciences:
1) Apply for thesis subjects that have been published by French researchers.
You will find these subjects on the Campus France platform.
There are two types of subjects: subjects already funded by the host establishment (choose "Type: Contract"), and subjects for which you must have your own funding (choose "Type: Grant").
2) Contact the researcher or Doctoral School that published the subject.
If you wish to do a Doctorate in the social sciences and humanities:
1) Check the Campus France subject platform.
2) Contact the researcher or Doctoral School that published the subject.
If you can't find anything suitable, you will have to prepare a research project that you can then send to a researcher.
How to find a researcher to be a thesis supervisor?
First of all, remember that you must not propose a research project to every researcher in the field that interests you. For example, if your research project is in economics, don't send your proposal to every economist! They already receive an enormous number of requests like that and can't go through them all.
Your proposal should target specific people within your domain of study, that means the theme of your research project must correspond to the specialty of the researcher.
After you've sent the proposal to the right person, you'll have to engage with the researcher in order to refine your thesis topic. To maximize your chances, you need to be flexible and ready to move away from your initial proposal. If you are able to obtain funding, say so at the start of your message.
Read Campus France's Guide: La Recherche en France for more detailed information about applying to doctoral programs in France.
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'VE FOUND A THESIS SUPERVISOR WHO ACCEPTS YOU!
Now the Doctoral School has to approve it so you can enrol in a Doctorate. If funding is required by the Doctoral School, it must be approved before you can enrol.
The annual registration fee for a Doctoral program is €380. Even if you have a doctoral fellowship, you will have to pay the registration fee. Doctoral students are not subject to the fee differentiation for international students, as are students in other levels. You can learn more about tuition fees here.
Remember you still need to go through the Campus France Thailand application to process the pre-consular application. Once you'll receive the confirmation e-mail from Campus France Thailand, you can then proceed to the next step for your student visa application (France-Visas).
